Could prophecy, miracles, signs and wonders be a test?

Could it be that the pursuit of spirituality, the pursuit of the miraculous, the pursuit of signs and wonders are all a form of testing the heart? How far are we willing to pursue these things apart from loving attachment to Jesus? What do these pursuits say about us, our perception of who Jesus is and how much relationship matters to him?

Is Jesus’ response to those who claimed to have performed signs and wonders and to have prophesied in his name a reflection of this possibility (Matthew 7:23)?

Is it possible that some elements of the supernatural are available to anyone who pursues the supernatural? Could it be that this is possible for the purpose of testing relationship? Could these things be accessible to see how much we actually want relationship with Jesus versus how much we want power, prestige or superiority?
